The Merchant of Venice A1,S3 (can do task)

Act one, Scene Three:

  1. Shylock is moneylender. Does he seem eager to do business with Bassanio?How do you know? Bassanio seeks out Shylock, a Jewish moneylender, for a loan of three thousand ducats on the strength of Antonio's credit. Shylock is hesitant about lending Bassanio the money.
  2. Which does shylock think is safe, his business or Antonio's?Why? Shylock is a usurer who mercilessly exploits his victims. His relationship with Antonio is a contentious one because Antonio has denounced Shylock in public, and he has rescued many from their debts to Shylock.
  3. Why doesn't Shylock want to dine with Bassanio and Antonio? Shylock's refusal to eat, drink, or pray with Bassanio and Antonio exists because of his own religious ideologies beliefs.
  4. What script principal of his is Antonio breaking to Bassanio?Therefore, Jew, Though justice be thy plea, consider this That in the course of justice none of us Should see salvation. We do pray for mercy, And that same prayer doth teach us all to render The deeds of mercy.
  5. Shylock tells a bible story to prove that the taking of profit is blessed, as long as thieving is not involve. Does he convince Antonio? Give evidence. Shylock tells the biblical story of Jacob and his Uncle Laban's sheep, where Jacob's thrift brought him a blessing of extra income. He says this illustrates that profit through shrewd business dealings is not a sin but rather a blessing, so long as one isn't stealing.Shylock begins to calculate what the interest would be on the sum but is cut off by Antonio.
  6. Shylock accuses Antonio of a whole catalogue of nastiness how does Antonio answer the charges?Shylock, a Jewish moneylender, agrees to loan Bassanio three thousand ducats for a term of three months. Bassanio assures Shylock that Antonio will guarantee the loan, but Shylock is doubtful because Antonio’s wealth is currently invested in business ventures that may fail. 
  7. How does Bassanio react to the propose bond? He proposes to be a suitor to Portia a lady richly left but he refuse it.

Profound- is a state, quality, or emotion very great or intense.
Exhortation- an address or communication emphatically urging someone to do something.
Virtuous- having or showing high moral standards.
Squandered- waste something, especially money or time in a reckless and foolish manner.
